Care & Maintenance/Outdoor Planting Instructions
Your planters should always be placed on a solid level surface. Do not directly place them on grass, soil, or an uneven surface. These planters include a pre-installed drainage hole(s) to allow for drainage. You must keep the drain hole(s) clear to ensure the longevity of your planter, especially in climates that undergo freeze thaw cycles during the winter.
Whenever possible, we recommend the following:
- Raise the planter(s) off of the ground to prevent it from freezing to the surface below.
- Cover the drain holes with a mesh screen or equivalent to keep debris from clogging the openings.
- Fill the bottom of the planter with non-porous drainage material.
- Fill the remainder of the planter with a well-draining soil mix that will not retain water.
- Cover the soil with decorative mulch or pine bark to the top rim of the planter to discourage water from pooling on the surface.
Cleaning Instructions
Campania Glazed Terra Cotta planters can be cleaned with either mild soapy water or Windex® with Ammonia-D. You just need to spray down the surface of the planter where it is dirty and use a lint-free cloth or sponge to wipe the surface. Be aware that it may take several cycles of wiping and drying before the planter is completely clean. It is very important to note that you should not pressure wash, use alcohol based cleaners, apply corrosive cleaners or clean with anything abrasive.
Winter Care
Proper winter care is recommended for all Campania glazed terra cotta planters for protection in environments with potential freeze-thaw cycles. Any water in the planter can freeze and expand which leads to cracking. You need to be aware that there is no such thing as a 100% frost-proof planter.
Ideally, you want to store your planter(s) indoors or at least in a covered area out of the elements.
If a planter is to be left outdoors over the winter, ensure proper drainage by:
- Placing a layer of coarse gravel or other appropriate drainage material in the bottom of the container, and
- Make sure the drainage holes are not blocked.
- Raise the planter off of the ground to prevent the planter from freezing to the surface below. If the planter remains in contact with the ground surface over the winter, the freeze-thaw cycles may cause the planter to crack or crumble.
